Apple once the pioneer of smartphones seems to be losing the race for innovation in the smartphone market. Iphones still account for around 55% of Apple’s total revenues and the company seems to be hesitant to take risks in major changes to it’s yearly phone lineups. The result is a stagnation in innovation for Apple and it risks losing market share to its competitors such as Huawei and Samsung.
Huawei and Samsung have introduced tri fold phones that dramatically increase screen size in a compact form. These phones are blurring the distinction between phone and tablets. Meanwhile Apple has yet to increase a foldable iPhone and rumors point this model to be just a dual fold screen instead of a tri fold. Every year apple makes minimal design changes to its iPhone lineup with the main features being the chip that powers the phone and some memory improvements. There’s no improvement to battery life. Some of the basic features apple still does not have is an under display fingerprint reader which is standard on android phones.
In software Apple has struggled to roll out AI features into its phones and have reserved these features for it’s high end ‘pro’ models. Apple has had to delay it’s AI advanced Siri to later in 2025 and this has brought on class action lawsuits from unsatisfied customers.
